Happy Halloween NaNoMemphis! I’m MLHGL and I will admit, I have been extremely badly radio silent due to some bad life crap for the last 20 odd days. And I’ll be the first to admit it’s still pretty freaking bad in my part of the world, so I do apologize to all of you as well as to my coML for that.
Officially, the season has kicked off with the refreshing of the NaNoWriMo forums and all. However, here in NaNoMemphis land, the season is getting to an admittedly sluggish start.
MLHGL here letting you know that the blog will be refreshed within the coming week or two (I plan to have it done by the 20th) – and I look forward to having our new ML come in and do some posts as well.
Hey NaNoMemphis! ML HGL here just wanting to remind everyone that it’s under two hours to the end of NaNoWriMo!
Go ahead and validate your word count if you’re close to the 50k, if you haven’t already. Just to confirm how far you have left to go. You don’t want any surprises down at the wire at 11:55pm. Trust me.
Go ahead and validate if you’ve crossed 50k, and you haven’t validated already.
So. It’s the 25th of November. Word count should be: 41,667.
Are you there?
Yes? ROCK ON.
…..No? Alright. I’ve got something for you.
Time for a few more word count tricks:
- All your compound words. Take them apart.
- Introduce a stupid character who needs to have everything explained, twice.
- Have your characters play a game. (I personally like UNO or monopoly.)
- Have romantic undertones? Put the lovebirds in a room with no witnesses, see what ensues.
- Introduce a disaster to the plot.
- Find a word crawl that you have an interest in. (the Harry Potter ones are amazing, MLHGL writes star trek ones, there’s even a Hamilton crawl already.)
Now, those useful links:
If you’re behind, the first one is all for you, and know that we suggest it in person every time someone starts freaking out about their word counts or their ability to word war if they’re on their own.

Today is day 22. We’re almost into the final stretch. WEEK FOUR begins today.
Week Four is where the momentum from the first week really reappears and everyone really starts serious writing again.
But what’s that, there in the middle of the week? For the USA, it’s the beginning of what’s known as the super holiday season. Thanksgiving. A word count de-railer if there ever was one. But, never fear, your intrepid MLs here in Memphis have a plan: the Blues City Write-a-Thon! Come hang out with us at the Benjamin L Hooks Central Library on the 26th of November and we’ll help you kick your word count back into gear.
There will be a candy bar, muffins, and it is a potluck, so please, bring whatever you think would be good. (Be advised that if your product has nuts, seafood, or meat it’s kind to your fellow Wrimos to let them know. Especially MLHGL, as she is allergic to both nuts and seafood.)
Remember, if you are coming in from out of town and are uneasy about getting around in Memphis, head on over to the Memphis area of the forums on the NaNoWriMo website and send MLHGL a NaNoMail, and she’ll make sure she’s available to you to make sure you reach the Write-a-Thon safely.
